Brutus, can you spare a penny?

At the foot of the Blarney Brutus, there are quite a few spare pennies glued to the pedestal — pretty well, I might add.  I am not exactly familiar with the significance of the penny here, except the old adage, ‘Find a penny, pick it up, all day long you’ll have good luck’.  Are there any other meanings here?
