I Like Friday the 13th

Friday, June 13, 1997

I don’t have any fear of Friday the 13th.  On Friday, June 13, 1997 I graduated from The Ohio State University.

That day, a freak rain storm came through Columbus.  I recall walking to the Horseshoe as it poured along with many other graduates and it was interesting to see how different folks handled the bad weather.  I saw a few girls crying because they felt their day was ruined for some reason and I sort of marveled at that reaction.  It wasn’t like the weather could be changed, nor did it reflect anyone’s academic achievements.

My reaction was to literally soak up the moment.  Notice I am still wearing my mortarboard!

After all of the students entered into the stadium, E. Gordon Gee attempted to begin speaking, but there was so much rain that the PA system was not working well and it was crackling.  While folks scrambled to get that working, one lone wolf ran down from the stands hooting and hollering and jumped into a puddle of water that had formed at the north end of the stadium where the flagpole is and shouted ‘Wipeout!’ I distinctly remember being given the speech about how that if anyone acted up, Guard members would be there to escort any individuals out of the ceremony.  After this happened, I noticed the Guard members looking around at each other determining what they should do.  When they didn’t do anything to this guy, all of the students broke loose from their seats in the stands and rushed the field.

Our ceremony was effectively over — we didn’t even get to hear our speaker, Bob Greene.  However, I got to do something incredible.  I was able to run across the field and dive on it like it was the world’s largest slip and slide.  It was absolutely incredible how far you could slide while wearing those nylon gowns!

It is really hard to fathom how much rain came down during that ceremony and how quickly it stopped.  My mom had some pills in a prescription bottle inside her purse that was filled with water.

Was it odd that our graduation was rained out on Friday the 13th? Perhaps, but I like to think that good things and bad things can happen every day. It is your choice on how that affects you.

Flyover at the Horseshoe

My brother and I attended the 2009 Ohio State Buckeye’s football season opener vs. Navy Midshipmen. As far as season openers go, this was the best. In both planned and unplanned ways, it felt more like a bowl game. Given that we were playing a service academy, there was far more ceremony than typically offered at a home opener, including a military flyover.

For the unplanned part, I am not sure most figured the game would be as close as it was. The folks who left in the fourth quarter missed a game.

Here was some video I got from my Flip Mino of the flyover.  The south stands were a great place to be to get the full effect.

When I first rushed to see all of the Brutus on Parade statues, not all of them were there. Rebecca and I went to see them again while on a bike ride recently. I really liked this Alumni Brutus. Since I am one, I felt I belonged in this picture.

The rear shot just captures a small amount of the detail packed into this statue.  The artist really took advantage of the medium to demonstrate the wide diversity of the campus as well as the students who have attended.

While taking a bike ride from Antrim Park to The Ohio State campus, we noticed that the part of the trail from North Broadway and continuing South has now been named Bicycle Boulevard. Beyond giving it the name, they have improved the path with good pavement. It is a great ride in the fall.

The Brutii Have Arrived

The Brutus on Parade statues have started to arrive at the Schottenstein Center. Conspicuously absent were the Butter Brutus, Gordon Gee Brutus, Tin Brutus, Elvis Brutus and a few more.

A pleasant surprise was a Bill Willis Brutus, which I found to be a nice homage to the great player who recently passed.

The statue details Tressels watch and WWJD bracelet.

Some of the statues have an incredible amount of detail. Noted on the Jim Tressel Brutus was his ring decorated in Block-O and Script Ohio as well as his WWJD bracelet. The Van Gogh Brutus had a bandage around his head and was bearded.  The detail on the Drum Major Brutus included the O-H-I-O around the buckeye leaf on his chest.

It is definitely worth a trip to the Schottenstein Center for a viewing. The parking couldn’t be easier since school is currently out of session.

I took way too many pics and yet I am still not  happy with them. Nonetheless, here is my gallery of photos:

Maize and Blue in Ohio Stadium

Dome at Entrance of Ohio Stadium

Rebecca and I recently had friends over for dinner that just happened to be huge Michigan fans. The traditional rivalry ribbing commenced, good natured laughs enjoyed. Then, I learned something new. One of our guests said that he always wondered why the dome contained so much Maize and Blue ornamentation. I thought this must have been a joke at first, but he insisted that I take a closer look next time I was at the stadium.

I did stop off at the stadium during a recent bike ride in order to get a better look. He was right — the dome is indeed adorned with yellow and blue. According to The Ohio State University Archives, this has nothing to do with the rivalry. You be the judge.
